How long would it take to drive from the bay area to just east of Grants Pass (on the I5). There's an Oregon state park there. Should we leave for our road trip north on Monday later afternoon, instead of Tues early morning? We could camp at Valley of the Rogue state park, they have yurts we could rent! (inspired by vespabelle!)
It could give us more time so we could drive out to Crater Lake the next morning.
But if it takes a while to drive up there, I'd need to check into how late you can get there.
Doable?

It takes about 5 hours to get from Sacto to Ashland. Ashland is about 45-60 minutes from Grants Pass. So in all, you might expect a 7-8 hour drive, depending on the amount of stops you make. Personally, I vote that you stay at the Ashland Hostel (http://www.ashlandhostel.com/). It's within (very short) walking distance of central Ashland, in all it's glory. Grants Pass is also a lovely city, with THE BEST small fabric store I've ever been to. I'm really upset that I cannot for the life of me remember the name of it! I know Guy grabbed a business card from them when we were there, so I'll see if he still has it.

I'd guess about 8 hours as well. It's where we always stop as a "halfway" between the Bay Area and Seattle.

And if for some reason you decide against camping, I like the Wolf Creek Inn. It's 20 mi. past Grants Pass, and very charming. Clark Gable and Jack London both used to stay there.

I'd agree with the 5 hours of straight driving from Sacramento to Ashland, so it'd probably be 7.5-8 for you depnding on the stopping for gas. My benchmark is usually from here to Portland, which is a full 12 hours. The first time I drove it, somebody had tried to autobahn over the pass and got into a really bad crash with one of the big rigs that you run into on that drive (actually they were probably killed), so I think that added an extra 1-1.5 hours on to my drive.
